Patient Options

Post-operative pain management is a crucial part or your recovery and Dr. Metcalf considers this a high priority in regards to how he cares for his patients. Please understand that you will experience some level of pain following any surgical procedure. Dr. Metcalf would like you to know your options for pain management prior to surgery. After reviewing the information below you may discuss your intervention of choice with Dr. Metcalf, or his staff, to determine what would be beneficial in your own situation.

Method of Pain Management Pros Cons
Narcotic Pain Medicine Including:
1. Percocet (Oxycodone)
2. Norco (Hydrocodone)
3. Dilaudid (Hydromorphone)
Management of moderate to severe pain 1. Prior narcotic use makes it more difficult to manage pain after surgery
2. May develop dependence
3. Possible reactions include: itching, nausea, vomiting, and constipation
Marcaine Pain Pump* (Local Anesthetic) 1. Decreases narcotic use
2. Used during first 48 hours after surgery, which is typically the most painful time
1. Can ONLY be used for 48 hours after surgery
2. Noise (small occasional beeps)
Ice Machine: Polar Care* 1. Helps control pain and swelling without the use of medication
2. Can be used throughout rehab
3. Is yours to keep
May get wet

2. Provides compression to help minimize swelling

2. Currently a rental option, as it is not covered by most insurance plans. **The average cost is: $125/wk and it is typically used for 2 weeks
Tylenol and Ibuprofen (no use of buprofen for 1 week after surgery) Management of mild to moderate pain 1. May not control severe pain
2. Possible GI upset
